GABO ISLAND ADVENTURES

The tour package begins with a 30 minute flight in a four or six seat aircraft from Merimbula airport to Gabo Island providing stunning aerial views of Eden and Twofold Bay, Greencape Lighthouse, Wonboyn Lakes and Cape Howe on the way. Once on the Island you be will treated to a tour of the Gabo Island lighthouse and enjoy the panorama stretching from the Tasman to the mainland. You will then be able to inspect the historic lighthouse precinct including the Lighthouse Keeper's residence and museum, followed by a short stroll to the Parks Victoria day shelter for a light lunch. (Toilet and rest facilities are available). After lunch your pilot will take you on a walking tour northwards to the crystal clear waters of Santa Barbara Bay. On the way you will see places of historical interest including the memorial to the wreck of the 'Monumental City', ruins of an early cottage, and a tiny cemetery - a silent witness to the harsh life endured by the island's earliest European residents.

The island is also abundant in wildlife and you will see penguin rookeries and shearwater burrows, and you will marvel as eagles and kites hover overhead in their hunt for prey. Depending on the season you will see seaborn visitors including whales and seals travelling to and from their Antarctic feeding grounds. All of this on a tiny island whose tough leathery flora has been beaten down by the winds and spray of the Southern Ocean.

Gabo Island is a 'must see' for adventurers who love islands, lighthouses and bushwalking.

Tours leave Merimbula Air Services' Terminal at 9:30am and return at 4:00pm. Tours must be booked in advance.
